Joel-Peter Witkin – Vintage Works at Hasted Hunt January 5 – February 18, 2006.
Hasted Hunt will present a selection of important vintage works by Joel-Peter Witkin. This exhibition begins on January 5, 2006 and continues through February 18, 2006.
The exhibition at Hasted Hunt will include rare prints of master works such as “Harvest”, 1984. Others on view will include “Prudence” 1996, “Three Kinds of Women” 1992 “Feast of Fools” 1990 and “Counting Lessons in Purgatory”, 1982.
Witkin has enjoyed a long, celebrated and singular career, capped by his major retrospective at Guggenheim Museum in 1995. He regularly exhibits in the United States and Europe. There will be a large retrospective this Spring 2006 at the Museum of Modern Art in Moscow.
Critical response to the artist has ranged from outrage to endorsement by the art establishment (He was awarded the Commandeur de l’Ordre des Artes et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture). He has been called bad boy and American Master.
Wiktin’s most recent monographs include Songs of Experience (with poems by William Blake), 2002, The Bone House, 1999, Joel-Peter Witkin: Retrospective, 1995 and Harm’s Way, 1994. He is represented in most major public collections including New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Los Angeles’ J. Paul Getty Museum; Washington D.C.’s National Gallery of Art and National Museum of American Art; Atlanta’s High Museum, Museum of Fine Art Houston and Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and internationally, Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Centre Georges Pompidou and Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; and Tokyo’s Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
This exhibition coincides with the Erwin Olaf: Rain and Hope debut exhibition at the gallery.
