POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY & IMAGING

PHOTO BY PAOLO VENTURA FROM THE 'GUERRA' SERIES

Feb 01, 2006

"The entire body of work is about the memory of the Second World War in Italy – not my memory, because I am too young – but for a fake memory, gathered through the stories of my grandmother and others – you feel those stories in the traces that are left of the war even now.  I build the scenes on a table in my home, creating a second reality, with dolls and other things that I make or find.  They are very small.  I use a Pentax 6x7 and always the same light, a table lamp from Ikea, and I use Fujichrome 64 Tungsten because it’s not expensive.  Then I print very big – there are two version, 20x24 inches and 40x50 inches – because I want to play with the scale, to make these fake scenes real-size.” – Paolo Ventura
