GREAT PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE 20TH CENTURY: STAGED AND STARTLED
Apr 01, 2010
By Elke Stappert
Carefully staged photographs by studio artists such as Richard Avedon and Irving Penn are juxtaposed with the spontaneous street photography of Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander and others. The photos bring up issues of truth and reality and the relationship photographers have with their staged or startled subjects. Works include Avedon's "Nastassja Kinski and the Serpent," Stephen Klein's "Case Study #13" of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Harry Callahan's "Eleanor and Barbara, Chicago," and many others.
