As a staff photographer at The New Yorker for more than a decade, Martin Schoeller captured a wide range of famous characters, from President Barack Obama and Lady Gaga to the skateboarder Tony Hawk. In traditional studio sittings, Schoeller’s signature was an unflinching attention to facial detail; outside of the studio, he had a flair for constructing scenarios that would allow his subjects’ idiosyncrasies to be revealed. A selection of Schoeller’s portraits for The New Yorker are among the works being exhibited in a retrospective of his career, on view at Hasted Kraeutler through January 3, 2015.
