ARTIST PIERRE GONNORD TRANSFORMS PUNKS AND GYPSIES INTO THE STARS OF REGAL DUTCH MASTER PORTRAITS

by Evan Siegel

Rarely are portraits of fringe characters so humanizing as Pierre Gonnord's, who shoots his subjects -- described in his artist bio as "communities that live off the grid...not yet illuminated by the buzzing glow of technology [like] coal miners, punks, immigrants and gypsies" -- in the style of classical, austere portraiture that bring to mind the work of the Dutch Masters. The French-born, Madrid-based artist is showing his photographs in a new show at Chelsea's Hasted Kraeutler Gallery (537 W. 24th St.) called The Dream Goes Over Time, which opened yesterday and will run through April 25th.
